Intent

At Whitley Park we want every child to have a clear picture of the story of British, local and world history through the following :

  • Developing a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British, local and world history.
  • Having an understanding of the ways of life, beliefs and values across different periods of history.
  • Securing their knowledge of the history of Reading, from a Saxon settlement to present day.
  • Understanding how our knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources.
  • Developing enquiry skills to ask questions and consider a range of sources

Implementation

At Whitley Park, we structure the curriculum so that Key Stage 1 focuses initially on recognising that the children themselves are standing in the stream of history and that everyone has their own relationship with history, in relation to their own homes, families and local area. In Key Stage 2, the history of the United Kingdom is taught sequentially in chronological order from the Stone Age up to 1066 so that children have a clear idea of the order of events in our national history. We have intentionally included units on the Indus Valley Civilisation, as well as West African Kingdoms, to reflect the cultural heritage of children at our school.  We also examine, as part of these units, how the history of other countries became entwined with that of the UK , resulting in the rich, diverse culture we have in the UK.

Our curriculum is built around teaching historical skills across all year groups, within a progression that is built on each year. These skills are :

  • Chronological understanding
  •  Interpretations of history
  •  Range and depth of historical knowledge
  •  Historical enquiry
  • Reasons, results and significance
