Phonics and Your Child – What can you do to help?

To learn to read children need to

  • learn 44 sounds (phonemes) matching them to the corresponding letters/letter groups (graphemes)
  • learn to read words using sound blending techniques
  • In school we use Read Write Inc to teach phonics – below is a letter from Ruth Miskin who wrote the RWInc phonics programme. She is one of the UK’s leading authorities on teaching children to read.  For more information about phonics, please take a look at these resources from the Ruth Miskin website.
You can also listen to the sounds using the following link click on reading and then expert help. You can also download over 250 FREE ebooks, to enjoy reading with your child.
