PSHE Curriculum Statement

Our PSHE curriculum is strongly tied to our RSHE, relationships, health and sex education, plus our school therapeutic work. We use a three-tiered approach to deliver our full PSHE Curriculum:

• Thought Box https://www.thoughtboxeducation.com/

• Science Lessons

• Standalone PSHE Lessons, (PSHE Association Programme of Study) including Sex Education lessons in Yrs. 5&6 only

At Whitley Park Primary and Nursery School, personal, social, health education (PSHE) is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos and both are taught through our tiered approach. British Values are promoted through the overarching aims and objectives of PSHE by supporting our children to become healthy and responsible members of society, as well as preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.

PSHE Statement of Intent

The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more. At Whitley Park Primary and Nursery School, personal, social, health education (PSHE) enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

The vision for pupils, staff and stakeholders linked to our school is: ‘For our children to have high aspirations for themselves as learners, to embrace their individual talents and together, achieve well in all aspects of school life. For us to provide our children with the tools to develop a strong moral compass. To find resilience within and to strive for and believe in a future for themselves that is filled with purpose and joy.’

  • Our school is one where everyone is encouraged and supported to achieve their personal best.
  • School is welcoming, inclusive, has a real community feel and is a place where everyone is valued.
  • Our pupils and staff treat each other equitably, fairly, with kindness and with mutual respect. At all times, staff and pupils are encouraged to show a high regard for the needs and feelings of others through their actions and words.
  • Our pupils and staff are enterprising and approach challenges with a ‘can-do’ attitude.
  • The needs and interests of all pupils, irrespective of gender, culture, ability or aptitude, will be promoted through an inclusive and varied PSHE curriculum at our school.
  • Our environment is safe and clean with everyone sharing responsibility for it.
  • Our culture is one of continuous improvement, creativity and enthusiasm.
PSHE RESEARCH

Our school is a member of The PSHE Association which evaluated research ‘A case for PSHE’ indicates that PSHE when taught well - helps keep children and young people safe, physically and emotionally healthy and prepared for life and work. The PSHE Association evaluated research ‘PSHE, Academic Attainment and Employability’ indicates that growing evidence suggests that the skills and attributes acquired through PSHE education have a significant impact on pupils' academic achievement, employability and future life chances.

IMPLEMENTATION

Whitley Park Primary and Nursery School have created a clear and comprehensive scheme of work, in line with the National Curriculum. Our PSHE curriculum is strongly tied to our RSHE, relationships, health and sex education, plus our school therapeutic work. We use a three-tiered approach to deliver our full PSHE Curriculum:

• Thought Box - A full SMSC Programme https://www.thoughtboxeducation.com/

• Science Lessons (National Curriculum Coverage)

• Standalone PSHE Lessons, (PSHE Association Programme of Study) including Sex Education lessons in Yrs. 5&6 only

Wider Curriculum

Where possible PSHE, GBV, SMSC plans make a cross-curricular link to wider curriculum subjects, particularly Science and P.E. The language used within PSHE is anatomically correct and used consistently by all staff.

ThoughtBox is a full SMSC curriculum with clear details in each of SOW as to how and where the individual lessons link to SMSC, other cross-curricular links and essential PSHE skills and attributes.

Displays across school

PSHE, BV, and SMSC displays throughout school reinforce the PSHE curriculum enabling children to make links.

Assemblies

We use ‘Picture News’ to deliver whole school, key stage and class assemblies, consistently from EYFS to Yr6. We always make a clear link to either PSHE, British Values and/or SMSC objectives.

Impact

• Children will demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty.

• Children will demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school – attendance will be inline with national and behaviour will be good.

• Children will feel safe in our school

• Children will achieve age related expectations across the wider curriculum. • Children will become healthy and responsible members of society

• Children will be on their journey preparing them for life and work in modern Britain

Summary

At Whitley Park Primary and Nursery School, we deliver the PSHE curriculum by utilising first hand experience and sharing good practice. However, we are aware that the delivered curriculum must reflect the needs of our pupils. We expect teachers to use our tiered approach (PSHE / SMSC / Science) to equip pupils with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.

We believe that the purpose of PSHE education is to build on the statutory guidance outlined in the Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education.

We believe that PSHE plays a vital part of primary education. As well as discrete focused lessons, it is also embedded where possible throughout the curriculum, particularly within weekly assemblies, Science and P.E.

PSHE is integral to the development of children’s values in order for them to become a positive citizen in a forever changing community. PSHE is an important part of school assemblies were children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.
